Intensive English Program (IEP)

We are here to help you improve your English skills and your TOEFL score. Even if you haven't taken the test, we can assist you and help you succeed.

Established in 1977, the Intensive English Program (IEP) is a year-round, on-campus academic program designed to ensure that international students acquire the English-language and university-level learning skills needed for success in the undergraduate- or graduate-degree programs of their choice at CSUN or any other American college or university.

CSUN's widely recognized IEP provides an authentic university experience with on-campus classes, small class sizes (typically 15 to 20 students), and state-of-the-art language laboratories.

The IEP not only prepares students for academic success through its well-structured curriculum and highly qualified instructors but also offers the following benefits:

  • Conditional (pre-approved) admission to CSUN programs prior to students meeting the English-language proficiency admission requirements of those institutions;
  • Preparation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations;
  • TOEFL waivers, which enable IEP students who have "pre-approved conditional admission" status and have completed the IEP's University Bridge Program Level A (undergraduate) or Level B (graduate) with a minimum cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.0 to enter approved degree programs of their choice at CSUN – or a partnering institution – without taking the TOEFL;
  • After-class tutoring and activity classes, free of charge; and –
  • For students enrolled in Academic Skills 3 or higher – the option of substituting university-credit courses for one or more IEP classes. This feature enables eligible students to begin working on their undergraduate or graduate degrees at CSUN while still enrolled in the IEP.
