Established in 1977, the Intensive English Program (IEP) is a year-round, on-campus academic program designed to ensure that international students acquire the English-language and university-level learning skills needed for success in the undergraduate- or graduate-degree programs of their choice at CSUN or any other American college or university.
CSUN's widely recognized IEP provides an authentic university experience with on-campus classes, small class sizes (typically 15 to 20 students), and state-of-the-art language laboratories.
The IEP not only prepares students for academic success through its well-structured curriculum and highly qualified instructors but also offers the following benefits:
- Conditional (pre-approved) admission to CSUN programs prior to students meeting the English-language proficiency admission requirements of those institutions;
- Preparation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations;
- TOEFL waivers, which enable IEP students who have "pre-approved conditional admission" status and have completed the IEP's University Bridge Program Level A (undergraduate) or Level B (graduate) with a minimum cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.0 to enter approved degree programs of their choice at CSUN – or a partnering institution – without taking the TOEFL;
- After-class tutoring and activity classes, free of charge; and –
- For students enrolled in Academic Skills 3 or higher – the option of substituting university-credit courses for one or more IEP classes. This feature enables eligible students to begin working on their undergraduate or graduate degrees at CSUN while still enrolled in the IEP.
